Graduation 2017

UPDATES – WEEK OF NOVEMBER 6th

Goal 1: STUDENT SUCCESS
WASC Visitation: Our mid-term WASC visitation is happening this Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017. Visiting team members Chair Elden Esmeralda, Principal and Robin Kitsu, Curriculum Coordinator will be on campus prior to the start of school and remain until they finalize their review. Reminder that this mid-term visit is to confirm our collective progress in addressing those identified areas per the WASC report. We will be having a faculty meeting with Principal Esmeralda and Mr. Kitsu at 2:30 p.m. in the library. Please be sure that examples around standards being taught that day, bell to bell work, vocabulary words, etc. are clearly evident in demonstrating accountability.

Student Success Alignment: To date I have received a few recommendations about pathway capstone plans, proposals are nicely aligned within the pathways, mentorship, and early colleges courses. Encouraging teachers in both Hopes and Ideas academies to continue your dialogue and share proposals with administration as the planning for SY 2018-19 begins in December especially addressing additional funding, personnel, early college courses, mentorships, etc.

GOAL 2: STAFF SUCCESS:
Tripod Surveys: Tripod on-line survey dates have been changed to Nov. 14, 15, &16, 2017. Reason for delay is due to lateness of need information being sent to schools. Attached pdf provides more administration information
Periods 1 or 2 will be the surveyed. (Registrar has already communicated with those teachers whose periods didn’t workout in terms of class sizes)
(See attached file: Tripod Survey Period List Roster.xlsx) (See attached file: Tripod Administration Guide for Teachers_Online Final.pdf)

Goal 3: SYSTEM SUCCESS:
Photovoltaic Inspection: On Monday, Nov. 6th a representative from Bay4 Energy will be on campus conducting their annual inspection of our photovoltaic system. Inspection will be mainly centered on our panels, energy capacity, and overall operational capacity. There should be no classroom disruptions. Upon reflection, the saying that “time flies” is so real as December marks a full year that our school has been utilizing solar power. Looking forward to having the next phase implemented.

Heat Abatement Updates: Crossing our fingers that our last inspection this week will result on a positive note. Thanks to those teachers informing administration about their room status and be assured that the contractors are aware. Current challenge is that every portable needs to follow the expectations in allowing the system to run as designed as this is the only way we can verify that the system is working properly.

Today’s Classrooms: Recently during a weekend session for new administrators, I was asked about my beliefs about the culture of learning within every classroom. Upon reflection, thought I would also share with our staff as I firmly believe that (believe many of you also share these same beliefs) all classrooms should be student (learner) focused per:
1) Learning based on their strengths – give students opportunities/choice in demonstrating their learning per their learning styles, etc.;
2) Voice – students collaborate, learn from each other, and share their learning;
3) Innovation – students need opportunities to demonstrate learning per hands-on projects;
4) Reflection – Students should be given time to discuss, write, and document what is being learned;
5) Critical Thinking & Problem Solving – students are exposed to challenging work and allow them to find innovative ideas per design thinking;
6) Self-assessment – critical that students are given time to self assess their learning whether per portfolios, projects, rubrics, etc.; and
7) Relevant Connected Learning – Provide learning opportunities to hear from community experts/mentors either in-person or digitally;
