Graduation 2017

UPDATES – WEEK OF MAY 15th

GOAL 1:   STUDENT SUCCESS:
Class of 2017:
Times certainly flies as  graduation is happening this Friday!!!   Inviting faculty members to be part of this celebration in recognizing our graduates. Over these past years, we have done a splendid job in preparing these young men and women and now let us come together one final time to share our “best wishes” as they move on to a future filled with opportunities.   We continue our tradition where prior to the ceremony, faculty are invited to walk with the seniors from the armory to the field and during the diploma ceremony ask faculty to line up as the graduates exit the stage.

  • 2017 Class Motto:  “What feels like the end is often the beginning.”
  • Class Mascot:  Lion
  • Class Flower:  Gardenia
  • Class Color:  Rose Gold & White

Special guests joining us that evening are:  Hawaii’s First Lady – Dawn Ige;  Board of Education – Maggie Cox;  State House of Representative – Nadine Nakamura;  Mayor of Kauai – Bernard Carvalho;  Council Members Derek Kawakami and Joann Yukimura;  Assistant Superintendent of Strategy, Innovation and Performance – Tammi Chun.

Student Support:
Professional reminder that any student(s) in danger of failing, must have documentation per student support,  parental contact, etc.  At this point of the school year, data shows that the majority of  teachers have been very diligent about this….thank you for your efforts!   Administration is following-up with those few teachers per lack of evidence such as posting of mid-terms grades, parental contact, student support, etc.

Staying Focused:
With two weeks left in the school year, reminding everyone to ensure that our students remain focused.  Please continue to hold students accountable and minimize their use of phones, eating, and walking out of the classrooms. We have come a long way in building a culture of excellence and it’s vital that together we are consistent in that accountability of purpose.

GOAL 2:   STAFF SUCCESS:
AVID Session:
Teachers interested in attending this summer’s AVID training on Oahu from June 20 – 21, 2017, are asked to check with administration or e-mail SRS Lisa Mireles no later than Wednesday, May 17th.  While the deadline has passed, received approval to still have teachers register.  AVID strategies are research proven and respected by educators.   Funding is still available to support interested teachers.

Goal 3: SYSTEM SUCCESS:
Renovation Work Begins:
Shioi Construction has begun work on the CTE renovation work starting with Bldg. G.  Barriers are in place for safety purposes and ask that everyone be careful.  For CTE & Science  teachers  impacted by the renovation work, please check with administration or Andrew Winchester should you have questions.

Administration will also need to meet with teachers who have portable classrooms as it not only needs to be cleaned but will identify areas where the photovoltaic air conditioning system & battery will be located. Administration has a tentative meeting scheduled with the contractors during the week of May 22nd to finalize the contract work.

INFORMATION LITERACY:  Teaching our students about information literacy is about providing them that basic understanding of receiving, retrieving, evaluating, and sharing information of all kinds.  Good information literacy skills are the only defense against the rising sea of all kinds of information.  Being able to understand information, determine its value and validity, and share the most worthwhile information, are key skills in the 21st century.
